Why She Hides Your Status Updates

Social media is a weird world that we have all accepted as normal. We had to learn how to be polite at the dinner table or considerate on public transit, but technology changes so quickly that we were never taught how to behave properly online. I bet you know someone who is insufferable when they get behind a keyboard. You don’t want to be that person, especially if you want to impress someone.

Here are the reasons why she would hide your status updates or even un-friend you. Don’t give her any reason to ignore you!

Nobody cares about your games. Your Slots/Farmville/Candy Crush obsession should stay between you and your devices. You can alter the games’ settings so that they do not post your scores or invitations to your friends. I’m just trying to save you from yourself here.

We get it. You work out. I don’t know any women who log into social media just clamoring to know where you worked out and whether it’s an ‘Arm Day’ or a ‘Leg Day.’ You’re taking care of yourself and keeping yourself accountable – Good for you! …But I don’t really care to know about it. Did you run a marathon? That’s remarkable and social media-worthy. Lost 100 pounds? Congrats- I’ll probably ‘Like’ the update. You just ran five miles and drank a protein shake? BORING.

Too many quotes. Whether you prefer religious texts, inspirational cliches, or Linkin Park lyrics ( I’ve seen them all), there is an oversaturation point. If you don’t have an original thought or at least a unique quote, don’t post anything. Before you hit the “Send” button, take an inventory of your most recent posts. If everything looks the same and occurs within a short timeframe, you need to lay off. Trust me, I already know that I can be the change I wish to see in the world.

Social media is not your mom’s refrigerator. When you achieve something, of course you want to share it. If posting about your accomplishment also gives your friends useful information about your life, go for it! I want to know if you’re moving across the country for grad school or joining the marines. If it’s truly a big deal, post about it! People who know you generally want to see the highlight reel of where you go and what you do with your life. That doesn’t include reading a nice comment on your essay or getting asked to come in for a job interview at the mall.

Your dirty laundry is unbecoming at best. If you’re wondering if something is too personal to post to the Internet, it probably is. It’s unattractive and trashy to post negative family history, updates on your custody battle, passive-aggressive posts aimed at your ex, complaints about your finances, and anything else similarly cringe-worthy. Nobody needs to see that stuff.

****

If you are unsure if you should post something, ask yourself “So What?”

If you aren’t imparting any important information or a unique perspective fit for a large group of people to read, hit the backspace button.

You will seem smarter and more mysterious if you budget your words wisely. Thought and restraint will pay off, I promise.
